Video Profile on Harlan Hayden
A.I. Dupont hockey player Harlan Hayden is this week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Harlan was named MVP in the Tigers' 7-2 victory over St. Mark's in the DSHA state championship game.
A.I. had been close to winning the title in previous years, but the team captain said it made winning it all even sweeter.
"The past couple of years we've been eliminated in the playoffs. It's been kind of rough, especially for the seniors. Luckily this year we had enough depth that we were able to come out and win it. "
The Tigers were selected to play in this week's prestigious Flyers Cup, a prestigious tournament featuring the best high school teams from throughout the Delaware Valley.
"I feel it's great recognition. It's great for the freshmen that are coming up. They know they have to do and the expectations they have to live up to, especially around school. Also, knowing how good the team has been and how great the team can be for the rest of their time here "
Harlan started his hockey career at age 6 not on ice, but rather on roller skates. What does Harlan say the difference was when he switched to the frozen surface?
"Ice hockey is definitely a faster game. The puck moves a lot quicker, you're skating a lost faster, and you get to glide a lot farther which is always fun when you're tired"
As for his game on ice, Harlan is going to Penn State's Brandywine campus next season to play hockey. Harlan says the Lions will get a 2-way forward who's game is similar to a popular ex-Flyer.
"I feel my game is more like Rod Brind'Amour's and I've been told that before."
