VIDEO: Interview with Catherine Zane
Ursuline Academy senior Catherine Zane is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
Cat recently signed a letter of intent to join the women's rowing team at the University of Massachusetts next season.
While rowing isn't a varsity sport offered by Ursuline, Cat says she became hooked on the sport after joining a local rowing club.
"It was something I liked, but I always did soccer so I didn't have time for it. I decided that it was something I enjoyed doing and I wanted to stick with it."
Massachusetts is one of the main states for rowing, including the famed Charles River that runs through Boston. Cat says she's looking forward to joining the heart of the rowing community.
"It's fun with BU (Boston University), BC (Boston College), and Northeastern. There's a lot of schools up there for quick little scrimmages. It'll be good."
While you might think that a sunny day might be the best day to go out on the water, Cat says a team gets its best conditions on a rainy day.
"Actually when it's rainy the water is the flattest. When it's windy it's just more practice for us on the flat days that makes us better."
Cat Zane will major in Sports Management at UMass, a school that won her over during recruiting visits.
"I thought about it during all of my other officials (visits), I just wanted to be at UMass. The coaches, the teams, they're amazing, it's something I'm looking forward to."
