Glasgow's Collins - WDEL Male HS Athlete of the Week
By Sean Greene Friday, February 3, 2012 - 11:33pm
Glasgow sprinter Leshon Collins is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
Leshon ran a the state record 6.34 second, 55-meter dash during the Delaware High School Invitational at UD Sunday.
Collins says hard work led to the record.
"I believe it's just the training. I worked hard in practice. I work hard in extra practices, in the school, the classroom, everything, so I can get chances to do this."
Leshon's races take under 7 seconds, I asked him what goes through his mind in the final seconds before the gun sounds.
"Once I'm in the blocks, I put my head down, I'm at the start, and I'm totally focused. I'm not thinking about anything but me and the finish line and time. My mind is completely blank."
Leshon says he used a potentially surprising event to help him improve as a sprinter, the 3.1 mile cross country season.
"It gave me the lungs and the endurance to finish through the 400, and the 400 for the 200, and the 200 for the 100 and the 55."
As for a track idol, Leshon points to 6-time world champion Tyson Gay of the United States.
"I try to do everything he does. He's a good person. He's a great runner, the fastest runner in America. I want to be like him, and better than him one day, and better than Usain Bolt (of Jamaica) who is the fastest runner in the world."
