VIDEO: Profile of Tanner Kurz
Delaware Military Academy swimmer Tanner Kurz is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
Tanner is getting ready for the Delaware state swimming championships at UD next week, where he broke two state records a year ago. Tanner described the feeling of breaking the 100 freestyle record.
"You touch that wall and take your head out of the water, (listen to) that loud scream of the crowd and I knew I broke it. From then I didn't even have to look at the board."
How do you break a state record? Tanner says it takes months of planning.
"You know what you're going to swim from that far out. Every practice is working towards that specific swim, and you stay focused the whole time."
Tanner, along with his brother Seth, are heading to Indiana next season to swim. What does he feel is the key to his success in the pool?
"Focus just to get through that hard practice. Having the focus to stay in even when you're tired, and doing your best every day."
DMA will graduate its first full-class this spring. Tanner says he has worked hard as captain to build the new swim program.
"Swimming wasn't very big at my school. We had a team of 20 kids or less, and now we have 45. Swimming is now on the map of DMA sports. We also have more fans coming out."
