Saliesianum basketball's Donte DiVincenzo is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore scored 19 points in the Sals' 47-42 home victory over Hodgson Saturday.
DiVincenzo says his team learned a lot from a 23 point loss at Howard last month.
"When we play our pace, we're very effective. But when we get into their pace and play with them we get a little shaky at times, but our crowd at home helps us."
Donte doubled his season total with 3 three-pointers in the win over Hodgson. I asked him if there was a specific drill that helped make him a more effective shooter.
"We did a drill at practice with chairs where we had to sprint full court and came down and got your legs tired. You had to use your legs more and more each time, it was exhausting. You keep doing it 15, 20, 35 times you're used to it."
Former Salesianum Coach Mike Gallagher saw Donte's talent early, making DiVincenzo one of the rare freshman to get significant playing time in his program. Donte says he didn't want to let his coach down.
"I do thank him for giving me the opportunity to play. I'm trying to build off of that for him giving me that chance, and try to take it farther."
Donte says his favorite subject at Salesianum is math and that he's interested in getting into math or medical fields, and says the best advice he's ever received is to be level-headed on and off the court.
"Stay humble through everything. Don't let your head get too big. No matter how much success you have, you're still not bigger than everybody else."
