Hodgson basketball's Bilal Nichols is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The forward scored 16 points in the Silver Eagles' 58-53 victory at St. Elizabeth Tuesday night.
Bilal says his goals have changed from looking at points to trying to create a more balanced score sheet with rebounds, blocks, and even assists.
"Doing all the little things that count like rebounding. It's not all about scoring... it's about playing great defense and helping your team in any way you can."
Hodgson has surprised some experts by getting off to an impressive 10-2 start, despite graduating three of the top guards in the state a year ago. Bilal says the extra focus on himself has helped everyone on the team.
"We have an inside-out game now. Not only am I benefiting from it, but once I draw double-teams and schemes, our guards benefit as well. That's the benefit of having good guards also."
Despite being just a junior, Bilal is one of the most experienced members of Hodgson's team, and he says he's seen a big difference in himself in just a year.
"My leadership role (has increased). Looking back at my sophomore year I wasn't as mature as I am now. I think it took a lot for me to transform the leader and the mature person I am now."
Bilal says that basketball has made a major impact in his life.
"It teaches you a lesson, about how to get practice early and get to practice on time. All these things will help me in life also."
