VIDEO: Interview with Tommy Halloway
St. Georges' wrestler Tommy Halloway is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
Tommy scored an important pin in the Hawks' 32-22 victory over Polytech in the Division II Dual-Meet State Championship match Tuesday.
The victory gave St. Georges their first team title in school history, and Tommy says it's motivation.
"It just makes us want to keep going. It's going to drive us (this weekend) to conferences and states and try to win another one."
Last year St. Georges lost to Polytech in the state meet, but Tommy says the team knew his match was a potential swing in points.
"Early this week, all coach says is 'all we see is gold.' We basically went out there to win, he told me he wanted a pin, I had to do it for him."
Pins aren't always easy to come by in wrestling, I asked Tommy what it means to him to be able to keep his opponent's shoulders on the mat.
"It's a great feeling, even if somebody before me gets pin it gets me pumped. I guess it gets the rest of the team pumped and helps us get the wins."
Smyrna High School was packed and loud for for state meet, I asked him if he fed off the crowd.
"I kind of tone it out. What goes through my mind is: 'takedown, takedown, takedown."
