VIDEO: Interview with Jocelyn Rodriguez
St. Elizabeth point guard Jocelyn Rodriguez is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
The Vikings' only senior scored a game-high 20 points in a 60-46 state championship victory over Caravel Monday.
After the game I asked Rodriguez about the reaction from her school, including an "M-V-P" chant.
"It was amazing! All the seniors in the front row have been talking to me all day 'you're going to win it.' Hearing things like that you kind of brush it off and focus on the game, but I didn't expect everything they said today."
4 different players scored at least 20 points for the Vikings this year, and Jocelyn says that was a key to her team's success.
"We say 'the only thing we want to do is win.' We don't care who does it all for us, as long as we have one person scoring enough, like Macy (Robinson) was hot on Saturday (during the semifinal win over Ursuline) we're going to give her the ball. We don't have selfish players and that's why I respect this team a lot."
While Rodriguez is clearly a fine basketball player, head coach Tom Ferrier says Jocelyn excels at the little things that makes teams great.
"She does a lot of things that nobody knows behind the scenes. She's the mom on the floor, and keeps the 'kids' on an evil keel when things are going bad. No one is more deserving (of a title) than Jocelyn."
Jocelyn Rodriguez isn't sure where she wants to go to college year, but has a good idea in what she'd like to study.
"I want to major in International Relations because I like to travel, and I'm interested in the business aspect."
St. Elizabeth's victory Monday was their 5th state title.
