Middletown High School Quarterback Darius Wade is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior is looking to lead the Cavaliers to their 3rd straight DIAA Division I Football title when they battle Salesianum Saturday night at Delaware Stadium.
Wade is 4-for-4 in reaching title games at Middletown, but says his best memory to date came sophomore year.
"You can never really overmatch that first State Tournament win (over Newark). That was such a magical moment that started out with adversity and we were able to come back and get the win.
Wade says he has grown in one major area from the freshman who quickly burst onto the scene 4 years ago.
"Maturity. As you come in as the little snot-nosed freshman, you definitely realize you have a long way to go and a lot to learn. Through my time at Middletown I learned a lot. I was able to understand what I should do and how I should carry myself to find myself in the situation I am now."
Middletown coach Mark DelPercio says his senior has earned plaudits from everyone in the Delaware high school community.
"He's well respected by his teammates and also among the coaches in the state. They can see how special young man he is, but also what a special person he is."
Darius signed a letter of intent to play for Boston College next season and says they offered the best balance for him.
I realized that academics was the biggest part for me, because I know that football doesn't last forever. Having a place that is high in academics, and knowing that after getting a degree from there I can go places and use that degree to my benefit, I knew that Boston College served that best for me."
