VIDEO: Interview with Salesianum QB Matthrew Sgro
Salesianum quarterback Matthew Sgro is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.

The senior threw a touchdown and led the Sals' offense to a 23-7 victory over Middletown for the Division I State Championship last week.

Matthew says the game was made special by the venue, the first state title game played at Delaware Stadium since 1974.

"I thought the atmosphere was awesome. We loved it as a team, it was awesome being out there. Delaware did a great job, and we thank them for it."

Salesianum's first play was a read option keeper for Sgro, and Matt says it helped set the tone.

"We came right out with it and they didn't seem to like it. Our line did a great job blocking all night, especially for me and Troy, they opened up some huge holes."

Head Coach Bill DiNardo says Matthew's progression as a QB this season gave him some flexibility in the title game.

"In the state championship game he was making a lot of calls at the line of scrimmage, he was making check-offs, he was going towards what we wanted in our game plan. I put a lot of faith in him. He did a great job."

For his future, Sgro says he's interested in becoming a lawyer thanks to teammate's father.

Brian O'Neill's dad is the (top defense attorney) in Delaware. I've really had a lot experience around him which has shaped my interest in it."
