VIDEO: Interview with Tyler Carney
Smyrna wrestler Tyler Carney is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Tyler earned a technical fall in the opening match of the Eagles' 42-20 win over rival Caesar Rodney to claim the DIAA Division I Dual Meet Championship Tuesday night.
Carney says he tried to set the right tone for the evening.
"It was a big match, obviously in the state final. The team was counting on me to get the bonus points, so I had the mindset that I had to get the momentum going. I kept getting the takedowns and letting him up, I felt like that gave them some excitement and built them up for what they were preparing for".
Winning a second straight title felt nice, but Carney said it was even better coming against the Riders.
"It's awesome. It's always good to have that rivalry where the fans are involved and the communities (as well). So winning a state title against them was huge."
Carney's win signified his final match on his home mat at Smyrna, and said it was bittersweet.
"I knew coming into tonight it was my last time so I tried to put on a show for the fans. I wanted to give them what they paid to see."
Carney will look for a second straight state individual title next weekend, and says there are things that have led to his success.
"Hard work, coming into practice, trying to get the mistakes you made before (cleaned up). You just have to come back and worth with Coach (Kurt) Howell and Coach (Kent) Rob(inson) and try to improve on every position possible."
Carney's current plans are to attend the University of Delaware which does not have a varsity collegiate wrestling program.
