Sanford guard Alison Lewis is this week's M&T Bank WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Lewis put together a conventional 3-point play in the final seconds to lead the No. 2 Warriors to a 56-53 victory over No. 1 Ursuline Wednesday afternoon.
Alison transferred to Sanford for her junior year not knowing any of her teammates, but says that didn't last long.
"I didn't know anybody, but everybody is so nice here. It's a small school, it's kind of like a family, especially the team. We're kind of like sisters, sort of. (laughs)"
Coach Marcus Thompson says Lewis works as hard at her game as anyone in the state.
"It's just been a blessing for us with her attitude and work ethic. If you come in here, she missed a shot today, I said to her 'you were in the gym two days ago, you shot 700 of those,' and I was serious. She shot 700 of those jump shots from that spot. She is really the beacon of our team."
Lewis says she's learned an important lesson for life, and basketball, thanks to Thompson.
"He taught me more confidence to believe in myself, and the people around me believe in me, so I need to do my part to help everything and everybody."
Alison signed a scholarship to play at Boston University next year, but is undecided on a major. She does have a favorite subject in school.
"History, because I like to learn about the past, and what happened then and how we've improved."
Sanford has set itself up as one of the top seeds for the DIAA Tournament which begins Tuesday.
