VIDEO: Interview with Archmere's Kelley Lucey
Archmere lacrosse goaltender Kelley Lucey is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
The junior has only been playing keeper for 3 weeks, but made 9 saves in a 10-8 home victory over Polytech last week.
The former defenseman says she took the challenge before the season.
"We had a goalie, and she's my friend, and I know she wasn't liking it in goal. They needed someone, and I was like 'why don't I give it a try?"
Kelley says she's quickly been learning some of the tricks of the trade as a goalie.
"It's really important to be aggressive, and you don't realize how aggresive you have to be as goalie. You have to focus on stepping to the ball, and not being afraid."
Kelley Lucey's coach Caitlin Kelley was a goaltender at Wesleyan University, and says Lucey's rapid growth has impressed her.
"For a three-week goalie to have that confidence to make that switch and really step-up and be a game changer in the second half, really speaks to her desire, motivation, and team play."
Above all else, Kelley Lucey says she hopes her play can help spark the Auks.
"I just hope they see me make a good save, and they take that and make a good pass or a good shot."
