Inconsistent attacks on President Obama's handling of Ukraine crisis

When Russia intervened in the former Soviet republic of Georgia in 2008, I don't recall a chorus of criticism of President George W. Bush for doing little to thwart Vladimir Putin's designs on Georgia...

Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Over the years, the story of Les Liaisons Dangereuses has taken on many incarnations from the original story published in 1782. Between the 1988 film with the same name, Dangerous Liaisons, and a few modern adaptations with Cruel Intentions and Valmont, it's safe to say that many are aware of the twists and turns in this production...

Ukraine: Less of a partisan divide in Washington than over Syria, Iran

Perhaps reflecting an American public as fatigued over foreign interventions and just plain saber-rattling as most in the eastern United States are fatigued over the seemingly endless winter, we're not seeing as gaping a partisan divide in Washington over what the United States can do about the Russian military intervention in The Crimea...

The tyranny of college football

"Religion is the opiate of the masses" -- Probably the best known quotation from Karl Marx. If Marx were alive today (at least in the United States), I wonder if he might not substitute sports, and more specifically "football", for "religion"...

AZ Governor Jan Brewer's veto: Is anyone surprised?

In the end, it may have been an anticlimax. Given the mounting pressure, threats of boycotts and economic reversals, etc., it was almost certain Arizona's Governor Jan Brewer would veto Senate bill 1062, designed to give added protection from litigation to people invoking their profoundly held religious beliefs to refuse service to gays and lesbians...

Stipend for Private School transportation in Delaware to be axed?

The issue has simmered for years: Should states whipsawed by tight budgets subsidize transportation for parents transporting their kids to private schools? If those parents can afford to send their kids to private schools, including religious schools, shouldn't the parents be able to afford the additional transportation? And in the latter case, what about church/state separation? Or do the private school parents - as taxpayers like everyone else - have legitimate claim to such stipends? After all, if they dumped all their kids back in the public schools...

No end to despicable practice of appointing know-nothings as U.S. ambassadors

Evolving definition of the word, "thug"

I used to think the term, "thug", referred to a low-life of ANY race, someone with a criminal record in the streets, a ruffian. But has the definition of a word shifted to refer almost exclusively to African-American teens and young men, playing hip-hop loudly from their vehicles? But, as Roger Simon asks...
