Obama Commitment to Afghanistan troop escalation now in doubt!
Just when you thought that all was a fait accompli - that President Obama had settled on a significant increase of U.S. troops in Afghanistan - comes this bombshell:
U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan (and retired Army general) Karl Eikenberry warns AGAINST a significant troop escalation, until or unless the Karzai Government gets its act together.
(Did this leak to give the President "cover" if & when he rejects a major U.S. troop escalation?)
Talk about a clash between the U.S. ambassador and the NATO and U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal!
That prompts this story in The TELEGRAPH of London:
"Barack Obama 'to reject Afghanistan war options in favour of plan with clear exit strategy'"

You can hear my interviews about all this with Associated Press correspondent Robert Reid in Kabul and CBS News Afghanistan/Pakistan consultant Jere Van Dyk...

Dr. Marvin Weinbaum - who led the Afghanistan--Pakistan intelligence desk at the State Department during the Clinton Administration (and who has generally favored an escalation of troops) - knows the U.S. ambassador in Kabul, and trusts him implicitly.
