Some thoughts at mid-summer

With the NBA and NHL seasons over and the major league baseball season almost halfway through, here are some thoughts.

The Miami Heat have three great players, but they lost to a better TEAM. Dirk Nowitzki was certainly the best individual player in the NBA finals, but it was the team around him and the way they played together that resulted in an NBA championship. I certainly think the Heat will win a championship with the three core players, but they will need better role players, and maybe some adjusted coaching, to win.

The Boston Bruins are evidence of what a hot goaltender can do in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Tim Thomas was outstanding the entire year, not just the playoffs. But once the playoffs arrived, he turned it up another notch or two. Without him, the Bruins don't win the Stanley Cup. The Flyers have taken note and are trying to get a top-line goalie of their own. If they do, they'll be a real threat to win in 2012 (provided they don't have to give up too much to get him).

With the baseball season nearing the end of June, the Phillies still have the best record in baseball even though their offense has only recently started to show signs of life. The Big 4, for the most part, have been all they're cracked up to be. In fact, while Roy Halladay is currently 9-3 with an ERA of 2.56 it seems as if he has underachieved, simply because expectations are so high.

They still need more offense...which will have to come from who they have, I think. Howard has been fine, Utley is starting to hit, Victorino is swinging the bat well. Rollins, Ruiz, Ibanez and whoever is in right field needs to step it up. Polanco continues to get base hits. The Phillies will likely be there at the end if the pitching continues as it has.

Boston looks to be the big problem. Their offense can bash almost anyone. And their pitching is good as well. It very well could be a Phillies-Red Sox World Series. It should be a fun rest of the summer.

My biggest concern this summer...getting out to play golf. I've been out once.....totally unacceptable. My game continues to deteriorate due to inactivity. Funny how work gets in the way of fun.
