Anyone who thought, before the season started, the Delaware women's basketball team would finish 31-2 this season, should be out buying lottery tickets.
This team developed around Elena Delle Donne far better than anyone expected. And most people, after their phenomenal run through the regular season and CAA tournament, figured they were good to the Sweet 16 and maybe Elite 8 of the NCAA tournament.
But as they found out Tuesday night, there are good players everywhere and Kansas had several of those good players, enough to knock the Blue Hens out of the tournament, short of expectations.
Tina Martin said it was sub-par defense in the second half...it was also the fact that, outside of Delle Donne, this team just didn't have enough people who could make shots...other than Delle Donne, the team was 12 for 38 from the field.
Unless a superb shooter shows up on campus between now and next season, that problem may still exist in the 2012-2013 season. It's possible to beat Delaware, even if Delle Donne throws up more than 30 points, if her supporting cast doesn't finish at the basket. That should be the number one priority for next year...Martin can coach them up on defense...she can't put the ball in the basket for them.
Great season Blue Hens....work on your shooting in the off-season and maybe the second weekend will happen next year.
