The second school in under a week is bolting from the CAA.
Old Dominion has announced its intention to leave the CAA for Conference USA effective July 1st 2013. Last week, VCU announced it is heading to the A-10 almost immediately, July 1st, 2012.
VCU is currently the premier program in men's basketball in the CAA. ODU is one of the top basketball programs and an up and coming football program. Both have higher aspirations than the CAA which is an FCS football league (C-USA is FBS, the higher level) and an up and coming mid-major, but not at the level of the A-10.
Both defections are a major blow to the CAA. Will George Mason, which had reportedly been courted by the A-10, follow suit...or did the Patriots miss their chance?
If Mason goes, the CAA becomes a shell of itself, particularly in basketball. I know a lot of Delaware basketball fans see this as a way of more easily competing for a basketball championship...but if they had wanted to do that, UD could have stayed in America East.
So what will Delaware do? What can they do? At the moment, the options are few and far between. It looks like they'll ride it out right where they are because they have no other choice. If they were going somewhere, the train may have already left the station.
