Remembering Buddy Hurlock

Buddy Hurlock passed away Sunday night. Buddy was a sportswriter at the Wilmington News-Journal and was only 40 years old.

Many probably remember the story. He had a type of brain aneurysm in 2010 and seemed to be improving somewhat in spring of 2011 when a tumor was discovered on his optic nerve. Several experimental treatments apparently didn't work sufficiently well and Buddy passed away after a valiant battle.

I knew Buddy for several years...many knew him far better. But I did know that he was a fine young man, a hard worker, conscientious and enjoyed his work.

Hearing from other News-Journal sports reporters, Buddy was most at home covering high school sports...which has been my main area of coverage since WDEL lost the UD contract a number of tears ago. Buddy truly enjoyed covering high school sports...and not just the big ones like football and basketball.

Buddy Hurlock left us too soon. He will be missed by those at the News-Journal, those of us in the business and all those who love high school sports.
