By many accounts, Thursday evening's Vice Presidential debate will be the most significant Veep debate in history.
Previously, it was assumed the burden would be on Congressman Paul Ryan, to put a "human" face to his reputation as a budget wonk. That, and show some mastery of foreign policy issues.
Now, following President Obama's catastrophic performance in the first Presidential debate, the burden appears to have shifted to Vice-President Biden, to make the case for a second term, and to expose the philosophical rift between some of Paul Ryan's more controversial views and and those of Mitt Romney.
The danger for Delaware's former U.S. senator: That Joe Biden becomes too strident, too harsh, too partisan (if that is possible).
I have absolutely no idea how this debate will turn out. I can imagine scenarios where either Congressman Ryan or Vice President Biden implodes, or perhaps more likely, where the debate comes out to a draw.
Biden will destroy Ryan. A pit bull going after a piece of raw meat.
No question Biden will press on the specifics of the $-5trillion tax cut, and hold his feet to the fire regarding a voucher system for Medicare.

Both Biden and Ryan are smart. They both are passionate about their beliefs. Biden's got tons of foreign affairs experience and has a good knowledge of what's going on, just as Paul Ryan does. Both men are controversial. If both men are on their game Thursday night, it should be a very interesting debate. Either could win, or it could be a draw. It could be a "blood bath" with both inflicting serious wounds on the other side. It will be interesting to see if this debate pulls in even higher numbers than the Prez debate. How many from the right will tune in to see a hoped-for Biden gaffe? The biggest difference between this VP debate and the 2008 VP debate is Paul Ryan does know what he's talking about, where as Sarah Palin didn't, so this debate for Biden won't be the "cake walk" it was in 2008.
Ah, Reality TV at its best.

Allan, will WDEL be carrying the VP debate? I know NPR will. I'll be listening to the first part of it on the radio as I drive home from choir rehearsal.

Yes, Mike from Delaware, we have no sports conflict, so WDEL will offer live coverage of the Vice Presidential debate from CBS Radio.
(Interestingly, Washington's WTOP Newsradio last Wednesday did NOT offer live coverage of the Presidential debate. Why? The desire to do traffic and weather against the new all-newser - also on FM - WNEW (owned by CBS). But I understand WNEW did carry the Presidential debate and picked-up listeners that night, to the extent such things can be immediately ascertained.)

I think the largest factor in this next debate will be the moderator. The debate between Romney & Obama turned into an actual debate and through this format we actually heard each man defend (or not) his positions, opinions and plans.
If the moderator plays favorites...we will find out nothing beyod talking points and likely end up with a draw.

Great, I'll listen to WDEL's CBS coverage rather than NPR's. Last week I ended up listening after watching on TV and thought the CBS radio post coverage was well done and fairly done, so I might catch the post debate coverage again on WDEL.
So that's where the WNEW calls migrated to, from 1130AM NYC (probably was actually Newark, NJ) to a DC FM newser.

I guess it was too much to hope for "fair & balanced"... "...ABC News' senior foreign correspondent, Martha Raddatz, is not only moderating tomorrow night's debate between Paul Ryan and Joe Biden, but no less than Barack Obama was a guest at her 1991 wedding."

Teatime: Are you now a liberal?
Mike from Delaware
Thu, Oct 11, 2012 8:44am
Mrpizza: As I recall Teatime supported Ron Paul, the libertarian. Some of libertarian views are rather liberal, for example legalizing pot and drugs. Many of Ron Paul's supporters may have ONLY been interested in him for legalized pot and drugs.
I can't speak for Teatime as to what his views on those topics are or why he supported Ron Paul, but I just wanted to point out that one aspect of Ron Paul's platform, thus so many young people supporting him.
Mike: I'm just a bit surprised that Teatime, even though libertarian, would consider Obama the lesser evil over Romney.
I've always thought that the ultimate common goal of all supporters of Republican candidates, be it Romney, Paul, Gingrich, etc., was to get rid of the donkey in the room.

You Republican guys are nuts. Every normal person is going to think Obama is the better evil than Romney.. Because he is.
What on earth is wrong with your thinking Process?
You are in the same ditch as a Minnesota Twins fan.... Yep, we're going to the World Series this year..... facts are facts. It's peoples lives you are dealing with. It matters.
Look, if you've been married and it's been good, and someone moves in, and when you ask, what will you do that will make me better off, AND THEY CAN'T ANSWER, lol, you had better not make the mistake and switch.
WE STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT ROMNEY/RYAN WILL DO WHEN THEY COME INTO OFFICE.... We've had the election cycle for a year and 4 month, now three weeks before the election, they can't say what they will do?
Really? Really? Would you buy windows from a guy like that?

kavips: What's wrong with my thinking process is that I don't want America to become a communist banana republic!
Fri, Oct 12, 2012 2:54am
kavips: Here's further proof that your vice president is not only a bumbling buffoon, but a pathological liar as well, and that at the expense of the dead:
First; Joe Biden and Fidel Castro are not even closely similar. Paul Ryan is a far more of a caricature of Fidel Castro, because both of them are deeply rooted in their own philosophy, and care very little for the people they oversee. Joe Biden, as everyone who has met him knows, cares about You when he meets you. If you are doing well, he is. If you are doing badly, so is he... He just has that gift, So I'd say, Paul Ryan is more of the banana republican then is our former Senator, Joe Biden.
As for the toxicity of the driver's blood who killed his wife, put yourself in those shoes. You get a call and are told that some drunk crashed into your wife's car, killing her, your daughter, and probably your two sons. That call and that description is SEARED into everything you then become. When you are talking person to person much later in your life, those things will come out, because you were there, that is how it happened. If you want to point the finger at the liar, it must go to whoever made that phone call telling Joe his life was changed forever. (Who it was, is in his autobiography, but I can't remember right now since it is not on-line.)
That is totally different from putting a bullet into the head of the American economy, just what Paul Ryan did with the debt crises standoff, and then blaming what YOU did, on Obama who was trying to give CPR to the patient you killed...... That requires a conscious effort and is no way even on the same continent as having someone tell you your wife had just been killed by someone who was drinking......

There are some things that are off-limits. Biden's family auto accident that killed his first wife and daughter. I can't imagine the pain those memories must cause him. GOP folks who start getting into that have taken a political race to a place they should never go, be they GOP or DEM.
Also politicians' kids, be they the Bush girls, Chelsea Clinton, Obama's two daughters, or Romney's kids.
Let's focus on the issues and what each man running represents, etc., NOT their wives or kids. None of them are running for office. They get stuck with living in a fish bowl because of the job their husband/father has.
