The Phillies made it abundantly clear over the last 10 days they are not buyers this year...but will they be sellers?
There had been talk the Red Sox were interested in Cliff Lee...they have the necessary money and abundant prospects to make a deal. But on Tuesday, they made a deal with the Chicago White Sox for Jake Peavey, taking Lee off their radar. Ruben Amaro Junior said on MLB Network yesterday there is "very little chance" the Phils will trade Lee...who has 70 million left on his contract through 2015.
Other than the Red Sox, there have been no other teams that appear to have any interest in making a deal for Lee before tonight's trade deadline.
The only other Phillies name as a possible trade candidate is third baseman Michael Young. One thing that indicates he might be moved is the Phillies callup of top third base prospect Cody Asche...but everything is still quiet as to a possible trade.
Beyond that, Jimmy Rollins has a no-trade clause....the Phillies are loathe to trade fan favorite Chase Utley, who is reportedly close to signing an extension, catcher Carlos Ruiz isn't on the table because the Phillies have no everyday replacement and Ryan Howard is injured and unwanted due to declining production and a ridiculous salary.
The Phillies may be standing pat...and not by choice.
