It's been a long time coming but it finally looks like Delaware again has a good men's basketball team. The last time a Blue Hens men's team had this much talent was in the days of Mike Brey...and all he did with his teams was take them to two NCAA tournaments and the NIT in his last three seasons.
Coach Monte Ross has been given an incredibly long leash, and finally, we are seeing some fruit. While part of the reason is the depleted quality of the CAA, with the departures in the last couple of years of VCU, George Mason, Old Dominion and Georgia State, it is also true that Ross has some talent on this team, most of it in the backcourt.
That being said, Ross still needs to convince his guards, in particular, Devon Saddler and Jarvis Threatt, that basketball is a team game. Far too often, both of those players, especially Threat, take the game down to a one on one level....frequently throwing up shots that would get them benched by some other coaches. Even Saddler, who will soon break the school's all-time scoring record, sometimes doesn't even act as if he has teammates on the floor as he goes into his Globetrotter routine, dribbling until he can get off a shot.
However, this team can score and with no other CAA team, other than possibly Towson, able to match their scoring, it would seem as if the Blue Hens are the favorite to win the CAA tournament, being held this year in Baltimore, and advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the late 90's. If they don't, it will be reason to re-evaluate the coaching staff. But my guess is they'll find a way to get it done.
