Celebrate! I-495 northbound re-opened

So DelDOT unceremoniously re-opened northbound I-495 to traffic Saturday.

So ends the saga which saw traffic gridlock in northern Delaware much of the summer -- except for the complicated legal battle, which could go on for years.

The effects of the I-95 re-opening were immediately noticeable and welcome.

Traffic gridlock this past weekend came in other places: For example, in Newark, with the arrival of U.D. students and their families. Paralysis.

Or, in Northeast, Maryland, where downtown streets were periodically blocked for a race of bicycles and runners.

But it's good to see traffic through Wilmington reverting close to normal.

One hopes three lessons have been learned:

(1). DelDOT is more diligent about monitoring existing infrastructure, and responding to motorists' observatuions, 24/7.

(2). Similarly, average people waste no time reporting any abnormalities.

(3). Lastly, no one ever assumes they can just dump dirt or debris anywhere near potentially sensitive infrastructure.

One great thing about the bridge being closed, was that it brought the greatest president in our lifetimes here to Delaware... So hats off to the bridge....

Regardless of cause, hats off to DelDot for getting this done quickly. The day the bridge closed, traffic in Northern Delaware was routinely choked. Driving through Wilmington was a mess as 18-wheelers tried to navigate their way through the city.

DelDot took its mandate seriously, got the right contractors in place quickly, snagged parts quickly; the contractors worked efficiently and quickly, completed the work as quickly as could have been hoped for.

Congratulations and thanks.
