How appropriate: Just as ragweed pollens start to circulate, to the discomfort of hay fever sufferers, Flowers' spores are mushrooming in the Delaware political blogosphere.
In case you've missed it: State Treasurer Chip Flowers - who tearfully announced his withdrawal from the re-election race two Fridays ago - procrastinated in filing his formal withdrawal documents with the state Elections Commissioner. Then, he sent Elections Commissioner Elaine Manlove a postdated form making his withdrawal effective at 4 p.m. today. Then, Flowers told someone in the Election Commissioner's office that he might want to delay his official withdrawal further. No matter that this maneuver would greatly inconvenience the Election Commissioner's office, as elections officials had wanted to open up all 900 voting machines, applying a sticker on top of the names of the Democratic candidates for state Treasurer, plus the button. Just to avoid any voter confusion on Delaware Primary election day.
(Flowers said it was highly inappropriate for the state Elections Commissioner to go public about his maneuvering.)
Now, we hear Treasurer Flowers will release some kind of statement later today. Stay tuned. (Presumably Flowers has been wanting to win some measure of vindication from the Dover Police Department on the harassment accusations, although that would do nothing to lessen the political damage from that classic photo of Flowers attending the Patriots' football game at taxpayers' expense -- although he continues to deny knowledge that onetime aide Erika Benner had used a state-issued, credit card to pay for the tickets to that game.)
For the record, Elections Commissioner Manlove tells me - as far as she's concerned - Flowers' withdrawal from the Treasurer's race takes effect this Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m., because that's the one document she has. She can't take Flowers' name OFF the ballot on the basis of a public BACK on the ballot on the basis of a public statement or news conference.
At the DELAWARE LIBERAL blog, the assumption seems to be Flowers seeks to re-enter the race...
This is all just a stunt to say FU to the state of Delaware. How anyone could vote for this clown is beyond me. Zero integrity. But, then again, that is what Delaware seems to vote for.

Sadly, there are some folks who would still vote for Flowers. As the old song goes: ...and all the Monkey's aren't in the zoo, everyday you'll meet quite a few... [lyrics from 1944 #1 record - Bing Crosby sang the song "Swinging On a Star" from the Paramount movie "Going My Way."]

It's official (and an anti-climax, after all the rumors):
Chip Flowers' withdrawal from the Treasurer's race is official...

Let's send him some flowers.
