Howard Pyle, Wilmington resident, and one of the greatest illustrators of the late 19th century, was the inspiration behind the creation of The Delaware Art Museum according to Executive Director Danielle Rice.
“When he died, a group of local philanthropists decided to buy out his studio to help his widow, and that was the founding of what was known as the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, but is now called the Delaware Art Museum.”
Danielle calls the museum's collection “approachable” since it's infused with stories from masters like Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and Andrew Wyeth. And because Pyle was considered a great teacher, the museum has always featured educational programs.
“We have for example a wonderful array of studio classes that people can take. Everything from drawing and painting to ceramics and jewelry making. We have specially outfitted studios for metalsmithing.”
