Karen Weldin Stewart
Karen Weldin Stewart grew up in Delaware; her ancestors settled in Delaware in the late 1600’s and had a significant role in the growth and development in the state. In fact, Weldin Road in Brandywine Hundred is named for her family.
Karen began her career while in college as a sales clerk in John Wanamaker’s Department Store. She rose to run a division for Federated Department Stores, which owned John Wannamaker’s, in the buying office that included ten locations. She then went to work for Allied Stores where she opened a Department Store and managed two large divisions. Karen subsequently struck out on her own and started her own business on Route 202 called the “Red Pin Cushion”. With seven employees and skilled marketing Karen did what she does best, successfully own and manage a business enterprise, meeting a payroll and earning a profit. It was this business experience that led Delaware’s Insurance Commissioner at the time, David Levenson, to hire Karen as a Deputy Receiver in the Insurance Department.
Her extensive insurance experience as the Deputy Receiver for the Delaware’s Department of Insurance, included being responsible for 20 insurance receiverships as well as project manager and consultant on three additional receiverships. In 1997 Karen became certified as a Deputy Receiver by demonstrating that she managed at least $25 million in insurance company assets for the benefit of the policy holders and settled at least 5000 claims.
After leaving the Delaware Insurance Department, Karen Weldin Stewart was the President and CEO of the Weldin Group, Inc., an insurance and reinsurance consulting company. Her consultancy attracted contracts and sub contracts with several states including Texas and Utah where she was placed in charge of the largest insolvency in American history at the time.
In 1991, Karen co-founded IAIR (International Association of Insurance Receivers) and was elected three times as its President, serving from 1991 to 1993. She received the distinction of Certified Insurance Receiver – Multi Lines, in 1995. Karen currently serves on IAIR’s Board of Directors.
Currently an Assistant to State Senator Harris B. McDowell, III, Karen is charged with preparing, editing and securing sponsors for a number of pieces of legislation including SB 177, the Single Payer Universal health care bill. Her legislative experience and her networking on both sides of the aisle has provided Karen with the skills and relationships to aid her in securing passage of important legislation. |
Platform: Karen’s “Citizen’s Blueprint for Enduring Change” includes working to insure and maintain a healthy insurance industry, and assisting small businesses, non-profits and others to form “Captive” insurance organizations.
