Candidates for U.S. House of Representatives

REPUBLICAN
Mike Castle
Delaware Congressman Mike Castle is the longest serving U.S. Representative from Delaware and is currently serving a record 8th term in the House of Representatives. He won his last race in 2006. Castle uses his experience as a former Governor, Lt. Governor and Delaware state legislator in Washington, D.C. to bring members of both parties together to enact laws that help all Americans. Mike Castle has played a key role in writing and enacting legislation in every term he has served in the U.S. House of Representatives, including: Vocational Education, Intelligence Reform, Child Nutrition, No Child Left Behind, Campaign Finance Reform, Balanced Budget Act, Welfare Reform, Line Item Veto, Assault Weapons Bill and the Brady Bill. In addition to serving on the House Financial Services Committee and serving as Ranking Member of the Education Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, Castle is also the co-chair of the following Congressional caucuses: Diabetes Caucus, Community College Caucus, Biomedical Research Caucus and the Passenger Rail Caucus. A graduate of Tower Hill, Hamilton College and Georgetown University Law School, Castle was born and raised in Wilmington and still resides there with his wife, Jane.
Education: Castle was a leader in the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act in the House, and helped write the No Child Left Behind Act, which seeks to close the achievement gap through increased accountability, early reading, and development for teachers.
Health: Castle is the House architect of the effort encouraging an expanded stem cell research policy. He’s also working to help establish the Delaware Health Information Network, and make Delaware the first state to implement electronic medical records.
Environment: Castle advocates reducing U.S. emissions and is an original cosponsor of legislation, which establish a cap and trade system for all greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide. He also opposed efforts to drill for oil and gas in Alaska.
Public Safety: Castle helped lead the effort to win passage of the Comprehensive Violent Crime Control Act, which contains Castle's "Youth Handgun Safety Act" making it illegal for minors under the age of 18 to use a handgun except under certain conditions.
Economy: Concerned that the current federal budget process is simply not working, Rep. Castle continues to push for a constitutionally acceptable line item veto, rainy day accounts, pay as you go for tax cuts and spending, and a more efficient budgeting process.
