VIDEO: St. E's RB Napier named "WDEL Athlete of the Week"
This Week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week is St. Elizabeth running back Craig Napier.
Napier scored 6 touchdowns in St. E's 56-26 victory over perennial power Delmar. Napier was quick to give the credit to his offensive line for his success.
"They were outstanding, if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have had what I had this weekend."
Craig is leading Delaware with 12 touchdowns, including 11 on the ground. What qualities does he say make him a dangerous runner?
"I'm pretty much balance. I like power back and I'm also a speed back as well. When I get in the open field I have the burst to get in the end zone."
Craig says he started playing football after watching his brother Greg Napier, Jr play for the Jay Street Raiders.
"I used to watch him when he ran up and down the field and I thought it would be cool if it was me."
To be an elite athlete, sacrifices have to be made. For Craig, that meant a summer more filled with football camps than fun.
"This summer I thought I was going to do a couple (camps), and have the rest of my summer hanging out with my friends. Most of the time I had to put them aside and do what I had to do for me and my future."
So far the hard work is paying off... Saint Elizabeth is 3-0. Craig says the season goals are simple.
"The goal is to make it to the playoffs and win the state championship."
And they hope to do it all behind the running of Craig Napier, our WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
