VIDEO: Tatnall's Pierce named "WDEL HS Athlete of the Week"
Tatnall school indoor track runner Haley Pierce is this week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Pierce won three events at the State Indoor Track Championships on Saturday, the 4x400 relay, the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters.
In the metric 2-miler, Pierce broke the state record by 37 seconds. While you might think that meant an easy victory, Archmere's Lindsey Olivere was going stride for stride with Haley at a record pace.
"I was just following her for a lot of the race. I don't really think about time during the state meet races, I'm just going for a place for the team. I felt good and felt strong and once I made a move I just try to keep building on that. I didn't know how fast I was going, I didn't really look at a clock."
Haley says she started dabbling in running in 7th grade, but when she reached the Tatnall Upper School, her running took off.
"In 9th grade it changed levels for me. It become more than a hobby, I guess. It became more like 'I really want to pursue this."
Indoor track can be a tough sport with limited facilities in Delaware, not to mention all the snow we saw last month. How did Haley's Hornets stay in shape?
"It's definitely a challenge each day to find where we could run and there aren't many roads that are plowed around here and the track is iced over. I think it made us mentally tougher. Running in workouts when it's 10 degrees and it's freezing and windy you get frustrated but in the long run it helps."
With both boys' and girls' team championships, Tatnall became the first school since 1995 to win both indoor titles in the same year.
"It was amazing, everyone was so happy. That was the goal we were working for all year. We work together and train together so it feels like we're one team."
