VIDEO: WP's Seibert named "WDEL HS Athlete of the Week"
William Penn Wrestler Sam Seibert is this week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Sam pinned Wilmington Charter's Matt Zaldivar to win the 215-pound weight class of the Blue Hen Conference Championships last weekend.
Seibert routinely gives up 20 pounds to his opposing grapplers, what benefits does he get from being a lighter wrestler?
"Speed and agility. Moving around against heavier people is more about tying up and stuff. I'm more about trying to be quick and going for the takedown to get the two (points)."
Sam is an impressive 31-2 as a junior. Perhaps more impressively, he hasn't been wrestling long.
"I was walking down the hallway in 9th grade and a counselor told me 'you should come out for the sport' and I was like 'why not."
With just 3 seasons experience, when did Sam realize wrestling was his sport?
"When I started winning. I kept winning and winning, and when I lost the two times it hurt me so bad, I don't want to lose any more."
Last year Sam won two matches in the 171-pound weight class at states. What would it mean to take home a medal, perhaps even gold?
"Everything, it would mean the world. I've been wanting to do that so bad."
He'll get that chance this weekend in the 215-pound division of the State Wrestling Tournament.
