VIDEO: Friends' Davis is "WDEL HS Athlete of the Week"
Wilmington Friends lacrosse player Sam Davis is this week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Sam tallied 10 goals and 3 assists in three games last week, including a big 11-10 victory over Cape Henlopen, 4 days after losing to Salesianum, the top team in the state.
"We just kind of calmed down a little bit. We realized that everyone makes mistakes, and as long as we settle down, we take deep breaths, we calm down, and we play as a team we can definitely beat and stay with anyone in the state."
Sam is one of the top goal scorers in the state, but is quick to pass the credit along to his Quaker teammates.
"I've capitalized, at least the past two years, off of great creators. This year, with the experience that I have, I try to feed off of my other teammates' energy."
Lacrosse continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and Sam says the pace of the game along drew him to the game, thanks to his Dad.
"I can remember passing with him in the backyard. Just kind of learning everything and getting everything figured out. I used to play baseball before then and I just remember loving lacrosse a lot more and having a lot more fun moving."
After his senior year at Friends, Sam will be off to Goucher College, a small Division III school. Why did he want to be a Goucher Gopher?
"First lacrosse, and then I visited and I love it. It's a really small school. The players and team are really nice, and the coach is really nice. It just seemed like good fit for me."
