VIDEO: Blanton sharp as Phils win second in a row Joe Blanton allowed one run in 7 innings, while Shane Victorino and Ty Wigginton each hit home runs as the Phillies edged the Marlins 3-1 at Citizens Bank Park Thursday. Blanton's longest outing since April 23, 2011 featured just three strikeouts, but the Marlins only picked up three hits while several defense plays by Freddy Galvis helped keep Miami in check. Shane Victorino opened the scoring in the 4th with his first home run of the season on a screaming liner into the left-field seats. Later in the inning John Mayberry, Jr. picked up his first RBI of the season when he drove in Hunter Pence with a single. Miami cut the lead in half with a 2-out rally in the 5th started by a double from Omar Infante, which was immediately followed by an RBI single from 8-hitter John Buck. After leaving two on in the 6th, the Phillies picked up insurance in the 7th when first baseman Ty Wigginton hit his first homer as a Phillie to complete the scoring. Left-hander Mark Buehrle threw 6 1-3 innings for the Marlins, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while picking up his second loss of the season. The Phillies are now 2-0 against left-handers this season, a year after leading the majors with a 30-14 mark against southpaws. Jonathan Papelbon allowed two singles in the 9th but earned his 2nd save. The Phillies scattered their 8 hits among 7 different players, with only Hunter Pence picking up a pair of hits. The Phillies open up a 3-game weekend series with the Mets Friday night. Cliff Lee is slated to face knuckleball-thrower R. A. Dickey at 7:05. |
