VIDEO: Howard's Watts - WDEL Male HS Athlete of the Week
Howard running back Marvell Watts is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
Marvell rushed for a score and returned a fumble for another in Howard's victory over Mount Pleasant last Friday.
The sophomore says the second touchdown meant more to him than the first.
"The defense (was better), because I don't usually get defensive touchdowns. I'm more of an offensive person, so the defensive one was a boost for me."
The game against Mount Pleasant was tight early, but Marvell says the victory showed his team is beginning to mature.
"I just try to keep moving and keep pushing, and not worry about the setbacks we have throughout the game. We don't stress the bad things and negativity."
Since he's just a sophomore, Marvell is going against players 1-3 years older than he is, he says it isn't a big deal to him.
"I don't try to worry about it, just play my game the way I know how to play it and let it come to me as the game moves along."
Marvel says one of the challenges of being a sophomore is balancing athletics and academics, but he knows that school is important.
"I know I want to be on the field and in order to do that I have to keep up with my grades. That's what keeps me motivated, I know I want to play football so I have to stay on top of my work."
