VIDEO: Winning $50M Powerball jackpot sold near Wilm.
Someone is a lot richer after hitting the $50 million Powerball jackpot. The winning ticket was sold at a liquor store right outside Wilmington.
WDEL's Amy Cherry has reaction.
"I'm very happy," says Navin Patel, co-owner of Cutrona's Liquors at 4623 North Market Street, felt when he found out the winning ticket was sold in his store. The store gets $10,000 just for selling the ticket.
Several people like JC came in to buy their lottery tickets and saw the giant $50 million check propped up at the register, and just couldn't believe it.
"I feel pretty upset," he laughs, "I'm very upset that it wasn't me that won."
Almost everyone was shocked. Many saying this just doesn't happen here.
"Cause it's never Delaware. It's always somewhere in the boondocks or country like Ohio or something like that, not in Delaware, and this is a first, here, in this store, $50 million?" laughs one lottery player.
Lottery Director Vern Kirk says it's among Delaware's biggest jackpots.
"Two of them have been larger than $50 million. Our largest Delaware Powerball winner was in 2004. It was for almost $117 million. And the next largest was as far back as 1997. That was $53 million," Kirk tells WDEL.
"You play the lottery every day?" I asked Flora of Wilmington.
"Everyday, and what got me was my son wanted a Powerball and I came up here to get him one and forgot to get myself some," says Flora.
For the record, it wasn't her son that won, and it wasn't Cynthia who works next door either.
"Oh I couldn't believe it because first something told me to come play the number and I didn't come so I was thinking well maybe if I would've went on my instinct then I would've won," says Cynthia of Wilmington.
And she learned the hard way, you've got to play to win.
