VIDEO: St. Mark's spoils Newark's homecoming

St. Mark's quarterback Zach Whitehead threw two touchdowns to help the Spartans spoil Newark's homecoming with a 21-0 road victory Friday night.

The Spartans' defense only allowed Newark to reach the other side of the 50 once all game, and that was quickly thwarted as they earned their second shutout of the season.

Meanwhile the Spartans' (5-1) offense struggled with a fierce Newark (1-5) effort. The Yellowjackets stopped 3 drives inside the ten, forcing a pair of fumbles, and also stopping the Spartans on a 4th and goal at the one.

St. Mark's did break open a scoreless game late in the first, when Edward Mendez took advantage of a nice hole on the right side and ran 45 yards to open the scoring with 1:45 to go in the opening quarter.

They would double the lead with one minute to go in the half when Whitehead, on a 4th-and-4, found a diving DeAndre Davis in the end zone to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room.

After Newark stuffed St. Mark's opening drive of the half at the one, the Spartans forced a three and out, getting the ball at the Newark 20 after a short punt. Whitehead would find Jake Schneider on a skinny post route to push the lead to 21-0.

St. Mark's will travel downstate to face Sussex Tech next Friday night, while Newark will have Senior Night against Delcastle.
