VIDEO: 2012 Philanthropy Awards
Nonprofit organizations are honored in the annual Philanthropy Awards.
The Brandywine Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals presented the 2012 awards at a luncheon in Newark.
Jennifer Mackey, director of major gifts for Winterthur, was named fundraising executive of the year.
"It's an honor. It really is. After 27 years, I hope it doesn't mark the beginning of the end for me of getting this award because I still have a lot left in me," she said.
She doesn't see much of a change in the state of giving today compared to years ago.
"I think it's just as hard to raise money today as it was in the early 90's when people were feeling fat and happy. It's always a struggle, you just have to engage your donors, get them excited about what you're doing, and how they can help make a difference in their community," Mackey said.
Brother Ronald Giannone of the Ministry of Caring in Wilmington was given the lifetime achievement award. Pete Booker, CEO and president of Delmarva Broadcasting Company, was given the community volunteer award for his work with the SmartDrive Foundation. Gina Bissell, trustee emeritus at Winterthur, was given the lifetime volunteer award. University of Delaware student Gracie Firestone was given the youth in philanthropy award for her non-profit organization 'Let the Kids Play.' The corporate philanthropy award was given to Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors for its financial commitment to the non-profit community.
