VIDEO: Hodgson heads to the ship
The Hodgson Silver Eagles were down by a touchdown going into the half Saturday afternoon, but Jeffrey May's three touchdowns lifted the Silver Eagles 28-7 over Archmere in the DIAA Division II semifinal match up.
It seemed as if eighth-seeded Archmere (8-4) was en route to another upset over a higher seed when quarterback Brian Rogers connected with Francis McVey on a fourth and long play in the endzone to give the Auks the early 7-0 lead heading into the half.
Hodgson (11-1) struggled offensively, but the No. 2 seed came up big on defense when Ruben Saunders caught an interception as the Auks made their way down field.
Hodgson turned it around both defensively and offensively in the third, when May scored his first rushing touchdown to cut the lead 7-6.
The Silver Eagles continued pressure on the Auks, when Hodgson's quarterback Raymond Jones scored a rushing touchdown of his own, followed by his two-point conversion to put the Silver Eagles ahead 14-7.
With five minutes remaining in the game, Hodgson's Bilal Nichols grabbed an interception to set up another rushing touchdown from May to extend the lead 21-7.
On Archmere's next drive, Rogers pass was deflected and senior Breshan Ward caught the pick to give possession back to Hodgson.
May, who has scored at least one touchdown in every game this season, scored his third touchdown of the day to secure Hodgson's appearance in the Division II state championship next Friday against Caravel.
May told WDEL how excited he is to go head-to-head against the Buccaneers at Delaware State University.
"I feel good going in, this is my first time since I've been here, but we put in a lot of hard work from the beginning of the season so it's good to know that hard work pays off," said May.
Hodgson lost to Caravel last year in the semis 20-21.
