VIDEO: Carra's late basket pushes Delaware past Princeton
Lauren Carra hit a driving layup with 2.1 seconds remaining, boosting Delaware to a 59-58 comeback victory over Princeton Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
After rallying to take a 4 point lead with seven minutes remaining, the hosts found themselves down 58-53 with 3:21 left following All-American Niveen Rasheed’s jump shot.
Delaware’s defense then put the clamps on, forcing 3 turnovers and 3 missed Princeton shots down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Blue Hens steadily worked their way back on a pair of free throws by Kelsey Buchanan and a layup by Carra to make it a one point game.
Following a Princeton timeout, Buchanan corralled a loose ball during the Tigers’ possession, setting up the final sequence. Carra took the basketball at the top of the key, and slid her way through the offensive left side of the Princeton zone, entering the side of the lane and putting up a tough shot in traffic off the glass that settled in for the eventual game-winning shot.
Princeton had one more chance, but their inbound pass was intercepted by Kayla Miller to end the game, and give Delaware a win against one of the top Mid-Major programs in the country.
The Tigers sprinted out to an early 14-5 lead and led by as many as 13 in the opening half where they shot 46 percent from the floor while holding Delaware to 27 percent in the opening as once again Elena Delle Donne was out during her battle with Lyme Disease and watched Delaware trail 32-25 at intermission.
It only took Delaware 5:03 of the second half before Danielle Parker’s jump shot gave Delaware a 42-41 lead, and the led never strayed past 5 either way the rest of the way, setting up the dramatic finish for the Hens.
Carra and Jacquetta May both led Delaware (5-2) with 15 points, while Parker, Akeema Richards, and Buchanan each had a team-high 7 reboudns.
Rasheed led Princeton with 15 points and 9 rebounds, as the Tigers saw their 3-game winning streak end, and dropped their 8th game in their last 10 battles with Delaware.
