VIDEO: 'Frustrated' Blue Hens still rout Towson
Elena Delle Donne scored a season-high 38 points as Delaware overcame a lethargic start to defeat Towson 76-44.
Delaware trailed 16-15 early in the game after a lay-up by Towson's Markell Smith. Despite the eventual convincing final score, Head Coach Tina Martin wasn't pleased after the game.
"I didn't think we were a focused basketball team today. That can come back to haunt us against teams in our league, so I was not happy at all."
Towson would cut the lead to 19-18 before Delaware ended the half on a 14-2 run, including a three-pointer by Kayla Miller to help spark the run. Delle Donne scored 22 of Delaware's first 28 points in a first half which ended with Delaware ahead 33-20.
Delaware then dominated the second half, eventually stretching the lead up to 32, which was the final difference in the contest.
After the game Tina Martin said she was "frustrated", and added that a couple of her players were late to the pre-game stretch, and "they will be running on Tuesday... obviously some people's heads were not here."
Delle Donne's season-high scoring output was her 8th highest total as a Blue Hen, and afterwards she said she's starting to feel better.
"I definitely felt really good, and more importantly since I'm healthier I'm able to get in the gym more often and work on my shot which I haven't been happy with much of the season."
Delle Donne finished 14-of-20 from the field, and added four steals and a block to a busy box score.
Ten Blue Hens scored in the contest, with freshman Courtni Green's 8 second-half points being good enough for second highest for the team. Delaware was outrebounded 33-29 by the Tigers.
Towson dropped to 0-5 in conference play despite getting 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 turnovers from Tanisha McTiller.
Delaware stays at home to face UNC-Wilmington Thursday night at 7pm.
