Suspect in Delaware shooting incompetent for trial A Sussex County judge has reversed his previous ruling and declared that a man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend during a standoff with police is not competent to stand trial. Judge Richard Stokes ruled this week that 67-year-old Ronald Williamson is severely delusional and cannot assist in his own defense. Stokes ordered that Williamson be kept at the state-run Delaware Psychiatric Center and that measures be taken to restore his competency. Stokes ruled in September that Williamson was competent to stand trial last fall. He held a second competency hearing last month after defense attorneys reported continued changes in Williamson's behavior and attitude toward them. Williamson is charged with capital murder in the 2011 death of 55-year-old Connie Breeding. |
