VIDEO: Blue Hens win battle of CAA unbeatens in Philly
Kayla Miller's career high 11 points and three 3-pointers complimented 24 points from Elena Delle Donne as Delaware won a battle of CAA unbeatens 65-56 at Drexel Sunday afternoon.
At the site of last year's 40-39 regular season game determined by a Delle Donne off-balance shot at the buzzer last year, the 2013 meeting appeared to be going down that same path when Drexel's Renee Johnson-Allen drove the lane for an open, game-tying lay-up with 3:16 remaining.
She missed the shot, and the veteran Delaware (15-3, 6-0 CAA) squad made the Dragons pay with an 11-2 run sparked by a Trumae Lucas three-pointer that changed the score from 54-52 to 65-54 Delaware.
In front of the 3rd sell-out crowd for a women's basketball game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the teams played a back-and-forth first half which featured 4 ties and 8 lead changes.
Delaware's biggest advantage in the opening half was on second chance opportunities, when Delaware turned eight offensive rebounds in 17 points, while Drexel didn't score a single point in the same situation.
Kayla Miller continued her recent scoring streak by nailing two of her three triples on the night in the opening half, the second of which put Delaware ahead 33-28 at the break.
The Blue Hens stretched the lead out to eight early in the second half when Danielle Parker hit a jumper for two of her 10 points, but Drexel (13-5, 6-1 CAA) slowly crept back into the game with a 7-2 run, and cut the deficit to three 3 times, and the late two point deficit, but could not get over the top.
Delle Donne added 6 rebounds and 3 blocks to her 24 point afternoon, while Danielle Parker recorded 10 rebounds to go with her 10 points.
The Blue Hens return to Newark with a Tuesday night game with Northeastern, a team they beat 76-51 in Boston earlier this month. Delaware and Drexel will meet again at the Bob Carpenter Center on February 21.
