VIDEO: St. E pulls away with an upset in final seconds
St. Elizabeth's Andre Patton and Sheldon Sorrell secured an upset when they sank free throws in the final seconds to push the Vikings past sixth-ranked Salesianum for a 50-46 victory.
When the two teams met earlier in January, Sallies earned the 69-57 win. Thursday's game began just like the previous meeting.
The Sals lead early on, when Brian O'Neill, who finished with 10 points, scored off the rebound to give Sallies the early 9-8 edge.
The Vikings (8-6) snuck by the Sals for the 25-23 lead going into the half, after Ryan Cason sank one of his three 3-pointers. Cason finished with 11.
Sallies (11-3) opened the third with a 10-0 run. St. E did not score until Patton found his way to the free throw line with a little more than a minute remaining in the quarter.
The Vikings were down by 10 points in the final quarter, when Nick Perugino fought his way to the basket for a tough lay up to put the Sals up 39-29.
The Vikings would not count themselves out because St. E's top scorer heated up.
Patton, who averages almost 26 points per game, knotted the game at 46 after he pushed his way through defenders to get a bucket. He tried the same strategy on the next possession, but was fouled with 32 seconds. He made both to give the Vikings the first lead since the half 48-46.
Patton finished with 20 points. Sorrell added 10.
Perugino tried to win the game with a 3, but his shot would not go.
