VIDEO: Friends' Lankiewicz - WDEL Female HS Athlete of the Week

Wilmington Friends' swimmer Elise Lankiewicz is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.

The senior is looking to duplicate her 2012 State Championship meet last year where she won titles in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle events.

She says the pressure ramps up for championship week.

"It's definitely a lot more intense than the rest of the season, especially when the psych sheets come out and you're looking at who is in your races with you and what everyone is swimming. I think on the whole if you've prepared well you will be confident when you race."

While she's one of Delaware's top swimmers now, Elise says her swimming career had a really simple beginning.

"It really started when my parents were worried about water safety, which is a common thing. It just started out with lessons when I was little and it was one of my favorite things so I just kept going."

Unlike some swimmers who might look at Olympians like Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin for inspiration, Elise says she's been most pushed by those closer to her.

"I think it's always been a lot of older teammates on my team that have done the things first, and I just try to follow in their footsteps rather than someone on the Olympic stage."

Elise will be swimming next year at Division I Davidson College in North Carolina, where she received the prestigous Bryan Scholarship, given to a top scholar athlete in each class, and says hours of swimming have helped her in and out of the pool.

"Time management is definitely the huge thing when you're getting up for morning practices, swimming four and a half hours a day, it's all about making time to get your school work done while putting in the swimming hours."
