VIDEO: AG Biden shows support for marriage equality
With the U.S. Supreme Court set to begin hearing arguments on the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8 in late March, Attorney General Beau Biden shows his support for marriage equality.
WDEL's Tom Lehman has more:
He argues the Court should rule in favor of marriage equality in the case and believes Propositon 8 violates the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment.
"Denying Americans the basic right to marry is wrong and unconstitutional," Biden says.
Proposition 8 was approved by California voters during a ballot initiative in 2008 after a state Supreme Court decision granted the right to marry to same-sex couples. Last year, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled Proposition 8 unconstitutional.
Biden and other Attorneys General will also file amicus briefs Friday, urging the Supreme Court to also rule the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional in the case of US v. Windsor.
Lisa Goodman with Equality Delaware says the brief is an important show of support.
"This brief that is being filed today makes it very clear that marriage is good for all families, not just some families," Goodman says.
She believes Delaware lawmakers will still consider same-sex marriage laws during this year's General Assembly. Gov. Markell alluded to the possibility of legislation allowing same-sex marriage during his remarks after being sworn into a second term in office earlier last month.
