VIDEO: Middletown defeats Mount Pleasant in 1st Round

The Middletown Cavaliers warmed up in long sleeve shirts that stated "Believe". Senior Khai Roberts did just that, as he dug down deep to drain four key free throws in the final seconds to lift No. 15 seed Cavs 53-48 over No. 18 seed Mount Pleasant in the first round of the DIAA Boys State Tournament.

Middletown (16-5) broke away with an early lead, after Joe Bamfo sank a 3-pointer to give the Cavs a 27-21 lead going into the half. Bamfo finished with 15 points.

The Green Knights (11-10) stayed competitive until the very end. Mount Pleasant's two freshman Robert Myrick and Elijah Taylor-Styles stepped up to knot the game at 36 to go into the final quarter. Myrick drove inside for the lay up to get within two, followed by an off-balanced jumper from Taylor-Styles.

Roberts, who finished with 16 points, heated up and opened the fourth with one of his two treys in the quarter, however, Mount Pleasant did not give up. With twenty seconds remaining, Taylor-Styles, who finished with 10 points, helped the Green Knights get within one with a score of 49-48.

The Green Knights had two key opportunities with seconds remaining, but foul shots by Roberts would secure the win.

Da'Ron Lawrence led Mount Pleasant with 11 points.

Middletown has come a long way from the (5-15) record they finished with last year. The Cavs haven't had a winning season since 2007, and Middletown players and coach Jasen Maciey said the turnaround is due to senior leadership.

Middletown extends their winning streak to six games and will go head-to-head against No. 2 seed Howard (18-1) on Saturday afternoon at 1:05pm at Salesianum. The Wildcats only loss this season is against Mount Pleasant.

Last time, Middletown and Howard faced off late in January, the Wildcats cruised to a 76-55 victory.
