VIDEO: Newark upsets No. 5 St. Andrew's in 2nd Round

Newark's Jahsun Greer scored 18 points as the No. 12 Yellowjackets led nearly wire-to-wire in a 55-50 upset of No. 5 Sanford in the 2nd round of the DIAA Boys' Basketball tournament Saturday at Smyrna.

The Yellowjackets led after all four quarters, but had to hold off a rally after taking an eleven point lead with just under two minutes remaining. St. Andrew's Ben Bentil scored a pair of inside baskets and nailed a three-pointer, but had three critical misses at the free throw line that proved costly when the deficit was cut to 53-50.

The difference was a solid Newark performance against the star center, as the Cardinals were unable to get him the basketball in the paint thanks to the work of Shikei Blake, Xavier Purnell, and many others.

Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets put together a balanced attack with Blake and Marquis Clarke both scoring 10 points.

St. Andrew's took their only lead of the game at 3-1 following a Tilghman 3-pointer, but a near immediate response by Clark put Newark ahead for good.

Despite the lead, Newark could never quite shake the Cardinals, as an early 15-6 second quarter lead was cut to 28-24 at the break, and then a two point game on the first possession of the second half on a Bentil turnaround, but the No. 5 seeds could never quite get over the top of the mountain.

Bentil led St. Andrew's with 20 points, while Tilghman scored 15.
