VIDEO: Sanford boys' earn chance to defend title
Sanford's Sabri Thompson hit 4 three-pointers as the Warriors cruised to a 60-40 victory over No. 4 Salesianum in the DIAA Boys' Basketball Semifinals Thursday night.
The three-time defending state champions used a 12-0 run over a 3:58 stretch late in the first quarter to seize control of a close, early game.
Salesianum did get a 60-foot shot by Donte DiVincenzo as the first quarter buzzer expired, but his team was still down 16-9 after the first eight minutes.
The Sals would never get closer the rest of the way, as Sanford ended up taking a 29-17 advantage into halftime following a Todd Hughes layup just before intermission.
Sanford kept the margin in double figures in the second half, on a night they shot 42 percent from the floor, while holding the normally sharpshooting Sals to just 26.9 percent. DiVincenzo finished with 12 points, despite missing his first eight shots other than the buzzer-beater.
Thompson, who is off to Northwestern State (La.) next year, finished with 22 points, with Todd Hughes (15) and Anthony Mosely (10) also reaching double figures.
Sanford also outrebounded Sealsianum 42-39, with Hughes picking up 9 of the caroms. Sanford advances to face No. 2 Howard for the Delaware state championship Saturday afternoon at 1pm (12:30pm WDEL).
Salesianum ends the season at 19-4 despite 10 points and 6 rebounds from Nick Perugino.
