VIDEO: Howard rallies into state title game
Howard used a furious 4th quarter rally to pick up a 55-48 victory over conference-rival Hodgson and advance to the DIAA Boys' Basketball championship game Saturday afternoon at the Bob.
Hodgson led 38-34 after three quarters thanks in large part to a 13-5 second stanza, but after the teams traded baskets to start the final quarter, the Wildcats went on the game-deciding 11-0 run over a 3:01 stretch.
Isaiah Theodore hit a shot in the paint to get Hodgson back within 3, but Jakir Stewart, Gjaimeir Stanford, and Tyaire Ponzo-Meek combined to go 6-for-6 at the free throw ling down the stretch to seal the victory for the second-seeded Wildcats.
Nick Richards scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the first half for Hodgson, who shot an amazing 10-for-14 (71 percent) from the floor in the opening half. Howard was able to settle down their defense at the break, keeping the Silver Eagles to just 29 percent in the final sixteen minutes.
Meanwhile, Howard's offense hit at a 63.6 percent pace in the second half as they outscored Hodgson 38-23 after the break.
A balanced Howard attack saw all five starters score between 8 and 12 points, led by Larry Woody's 12 points. Lamont Davis scored 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks to stuff the stat sheet.
Howard will face three-time defending champion Sanford Saturday afternoon at 1pm (12:30 WDEL) for the Delaware state title.
Hodgson finishes their season at 19-4, with two of their losses coming to Howard.
