VIDEO: Blue Hens start slow, but advance in CAAs
Elena Delle Donne scored 17 of her 21 points in the 2nd half, as Delaware overcame a rare halftime deficit to defeat UNC-Wilmington 51-43 in the Quarterfinals of the CAA Women's Basketball Tournament in Upper Marlboro, Maryland Friday afternoon.
After quickly jumping out to a 7-2 lead, the No. 9 seeded Seahawks then scored 13 of the next points to jump ahead 15-9 with 5:56 to go in the opening half.
Delaware finally got into double digits with just 2:51 to go in the opening stanza on a Lauren Carra jumper, which was quickly followed by baskets from Akeema Richards and Carra during a 58 second 6-0 to knot the game.
UNCW, which played only its 5 starters for the second straight day, scored the last 5 points of the half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Kelva Atkins to lead 20-15 at intermission.
Delle Donne gave Delaware its first lead since 7-5 at 23-22 with a basket at the 14:47 mark, and the teams played even for the next four minutes to get to 30-30.
After the Under-12 media time out, Delaware finally got its offense in rhythm, going on an 8-2 run in that segment including 4 points by Trumae Lucas. UNCW's shot finally began to fade as Delaware found more and more open looks, many by Delle Donne, as the lead reached double figures at 47-36, setting up the final stretch to victory.
The Blue Hens shot 52 percent in the second half after a 5-for-23 performance in the first 20 minutes. Delle Donne was 8-for-9 to finish up the game.
Delaware's defense was strong throughout, holding the Seahawks to just 30.2 percent shooting, including 25.8 percent in the second half, and 7-of-30 from behind the arc. Three of the five UNCW players did reach double figures: Kelva Atkins (13), Tawanna Lee (12), and Jessica Freeman (10).
Delle Donne added 11 rebounds to give her a double-double, while Danielle Parker just missed with 8 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Carra scored 10 points for the Blue Hens, who will play Hofstra at 2pm Saturday. The 5th seeds upset Northeastern 57-52 in the second semifinal Friday.
