Congressmen to honor fallen officer, Lt. Joe Szczerba
Delaware congressmen say a fallen New Castle County police officer will be honored for bravery.
U.S. Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons and Rep. John Carney say they will be joined by U.S. Attorney Charlie Oberly Monday to present the award in New Castle.
The Congressional Badge of Bravery award will be bestowed on New Castle County Police Officer Joe Szczerba.
David Salasky of Wilmington has been charged with fatally stabbing the 44-year-old Szczerba in September 2011 after Szczerba and other officers responded to a report of a vehicle break-in near New Castle.
The lawmakers say that despite being mortally wounded, Szczerba detained the suspect until other officers arrived on the scene, likely preventing other officers from being injured.
